James Death is here.
You'll have read Eugene's message (on the Nottingham Board) that we have live streaming.
I'm being superseded!
Seriously, I don't regard the streaming as a rival, I hope my text will complement that coverage.
Also I know of you will be doing other things, and catch up with this later.
I'll even give you the link:
"Today's AC Opens final between Reg Bamford and James Death will be live streamed on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Jb1EZqT2axE from 10am BST."

The players are warming up.
The weather is already warm.
10 Jul 2022 9:05AM (Tournament); 28 Readers
Bamford and Death have played 53 games, Death has won 13.
Doing the math last night, if you only win a quarter of your games, you win a best-of-5 10% of the time.
Happily, sport doesn't work like that. If I offered you 9-1 against Death, you'd grab my arm off.
Let's just say Bamford is clear favourite.

Most players play the northward rush to peelee after 4, but not Death. He's confident of getting forward rush after 5.
Does so.
10 Jul 2022 10:14AM (Tournament); 27 Readers
Bamford's misapproach of 2-back, from not very far, is his first proper error for a while, certainly since I've been watching the event..
My expert tells me that his 3rd turn take-off into 2 has to count as an error.
10 Jul 2022 10:17AM (Tournament); 29 Readers

A word on the seeding.
The Selection Committee was asked to seed eight players - and they did!
Often the seeding is fudged, with two or more players given equal seeding.
This time they went for 1-8. You can work out which from their position in the Draw.
The top two seeds are in the Final.

Not to mention the year they made Aiton joint 1st seed with Bamford and Fulford. Not sure how many of the last two' 21 titles had been won by then, Aiton still has zero.

T12 Death Yellow makes 1, though with more wire than he wanted. Rushes Red 5y SE of 2. Approaches putting Red into yardline area. Runs 2 off lawn.
Rushes to 3y NW of 3. Makes 3 with forward rush. Death asks for umpire - to see if he can rush into 4th corner for the cannon. Not quite.

Death has reached 2-back without alarm.
Another expert describes pegging yourself out as "horrible".
Because, of course, Bamford no longer gets lifts or contact.
Except wiring lifts.

T12 Death Yellow is making penult off Black, with Red at rover.
10 Jul 2022 2:19PM (Tournament); 37 Readers
Death croquets Black behind rover, makes the hoop, roquets Black NE of Red, croquets Black 3y NW of 4th corner,
Red and Yellow are near 2nd corner.
A runner has been sent out, and reports that Black can see the peg, and Red but not Yellow.

Sorry, forgotten where the black clip is. It's on rover, not the peg.

Bamford misses! Looked close.
T14 Death Red croquets Black to 2, rushes Yellow into hoop 1, which was handy, as it seemed to be a bit hard.
Death has a three-ball break.

He finished a bit shy of Black at 2, so take-off approach, but copes.

Death hasn't the ideal rush after 6. Needs a squarish split from 4y ENE of peg. Good shot!

Death is not getting a rush out of every hoop, but his croquet strokes are good enough to compensate.
Now at 4-back.

A missive from Sam Murray:
Your account of the 2018 seeding isn’t correct. The seeding committee have no powers over who plays whom beyond choosing seeding places. 8 seeds are chosen, even if 8th place is determined by lot. They can’t then require the ‘9th seed’ to play the 8th. That’s entirely random.
I obviously misunderstood at the time. Perhaps someone was joking and I took it seriously.

Croquet stroke is good enough. Death hasn't had a 4-ball break since game 1. This is his 4th 3-ball break. Hasn't broken down yet!

T3 Death is uncharacteristically ragged around 6 / 1-back. His 2-back pioneer is 10y NW of hoop.

Another little stop-shot, and Blue rushes Black to 1, 4y past in fact. Approach looks OK, he's thru with an eastward rush.

T5 Death Blue rushes Black south of Red, stops it towards 4-back, a little far on Red but a good cut-rush to SW of Yellow.

Poor dolly rush of Yellow to 2, 1y hoop, run to boundary.
10 Jul 2022 3:08PM (Tournament); 34 Readers
The Black is maybe 5y S of 3.
Yellow is croqueted to 4, bit short but Blue is perfect on Red.
Again the dolly rush to hoop is underhit.
Take-off approach, good enough, you'd think.
But Blue runs hoop just by a few inches.
Ref is on.

Death Blue peels Black thru 4-back after 3.
Red and Yellow aren't exactly where you'd want them, but should be good enough, given it's a front lawn at Hurlingham.

This time Death fails to get forward rush after 5.
Taking croquet from near hoop 4.
Red wants to go to 1-back, Blue to somewhere whence he can hit Black.
Which is exactly what has happened. In fact he can rush Black across.

Yellow may be 3y WSW of 2-back. May preclude Death attempting rover peel before 2-back.
Indeed, Blue rushes Black off W bdry behind Yellow. Can now send Black back to rover. Nicely done.

Bamford's game 3 tactic reminded me of the 2005 Open Doubles Final. Clarke and Fulford v Bamford and Gibbons. Here, lawn 3 I think.
Gibbons to 1-back.
Bamford embarks on sextuple.
Finishes with Gibbons' ball on rover, Bamford's ball off the lawn.
Fulford then played an all-round three-ball break, including a POP, for some tactical reason I forget.
Sadly Clarke soon missed a short roquet.
Gibbons hit in, croqueted a ball behind rover, hit the other ball on the East boundary, took off to rover, ran it and won.
