Friday afternoon- Singles QFs by Andrew Gregory

Good afternoon from Surbiton.

05 Jul 2019 2:33PM (Tournament); 1 Readers

I am just by lawn 4 where Death v Carter will be starting soon.

Mulliner v Suter is on lawn 5. I saw Mulliner fail 2, but he's back in with the first break.

05 Jul 2019 2:34PM (Tournament); 1 Readers

On lawn 1 Avery is 1-0 up v Maugham, break each in the second.
On lawn 2 Bamford had a TP in the first, and was on a sextuple in the second. He failed 3-back with 3 peels done. Chapman now going round.

05 Jul 2019 2:41PM (Tournament); 2 Readers

These matches are best-of-3, superAdvanced.

Mulliner is round to 4-back.

05 Jul 2019 2:47PM (Tournament); 3 Readers

We're off on lawn 4. Carter Yellow to E bdry, 12y N of 4th corner
Death Blue shoots from B-baulk, missing to 5y N of 4th corner.
Carter Red hits Blue from A-baulk, croquet stroke sees Red off lawn 3y S of Yellow.

05 Jul 2019 2:52PM (Tournament); 5 Readers

T4 Death Black shoots from B-baulk, rushes Yellow off S bdry. Yellow to 3, no rush on Red. Blue is 9y S of 2.
Big roll leaves Black a bit short of Blue. Rush to 1 is over-cut. Now take-off approach from 4y. 4' hoop, slightly angled. Strokes it through.

05 Jul 2019 2:56PM (Tournament); 5 Readers

Suter has just made hoop 2, bit of work needed for the break.

Death has reached hoop 5 on 4-ball break.

05 Jul 2019 2:59PM (Tournament); 6 Readers

There's some light cloud cover, still pleasantly warm. It was hotter earlier in the week.
Thanks to Celia for cleaning my screen. It hasn't been the same since a bird pooped on it at Hurlingham two years ago.

Death Black has made 1 -back and left Blue near 2nd corner in anticipation of the contact leave.
Suter has established his break.

05 Jul 2019 3:05PM (Tournament); 5 Readers

Death has made 9 hoops. Red is left in or near 4th corner, Yellow 7y N of Red, Black into 3rd corner.

T5 Carter Yellow takes contact off Red, rolls them along into A-baulk, leaves rush to 1.

Avery has beaten Maugham 2-0.

05 Jul 2019 3:07PM (Tournament); 5 Readers

Earlier in the week lawn 3 was measured as 14 plummers.

T6 Death Blue shoots at Black, missing into contact.

05 Jul 2019 3:10PM (Tournament); 6 Readers

T7 Carter's dolly rush to 1 is not the best, poor approach, fails 4' hoop.

05 Jul 2019 3:11PM (Tournament); 6 Readers

T8 Death has played a 5:1 ratio pass roll. More likely he deliberately croqueted Black into hoop 3. Standard TP in front of him.

05 Jul 2019 3:14PM (Tournament); 7 Readers

Suter and Mulliner both 1 and 4-back, Suter making contact leave.

Death Blue runs hoop 3 into Red. Then rush-peels Black thru 4-back. So no hoop 5 pioneer. Makes 4 off Yellow.

05 Jul 2019 3:18PM (Tournament); 5 Readers

Bamford beats Chapman 2-0. Congratulations to Miranda for being the first non-seed to reach the quarter-final since er... (inadequate research)

Death Blue peels Black thru penult after 6.

05 Jul 2019 3:22PM (Tournament); 5 Readers

Death jawses rover peel after 3-back. Doesn't get rush on other ball (Red), roll puts Red at most a yard in from the end of B-baulk. Blue makes 4-back and penult off Yellow, rushes Yellow back to B-baulk, croquets Yellow near peg getting rush on Red. Black still in jaws of rover. Trivial irish peel. Rushes Red toward west bdry, good take-off to get rush on Yellow.

05 Jul 2019 3:32PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Death wins game 1 +26tp.

05 Jul 2019 3:32PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Game 2 Carter Yellow bounces off hoop 5 to 2y NE of hoop, not the best spot for rushing to hoop 1.
Death Blue shoots at Yellow from 1st corner. Hits hoop 5, goes off E bdry 10y N of 4th corner.

05 Jul 2019 3:35PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

On lawn 5 Suter has his second break.

05 Jul 2019 3:43PM (Tournament); 4 Readers

Carter has grovelled thru hoop 3. Referee is called. 5y hampered shot. Misses.

Large bird poop lands one yard from me.

05 Jul 2019 3:47PM (Tournament); 4 Readers

T4 Death Black makes double of Red and yellow from B-baulk, hits Red.

Suter still going round, no thought of a triple.

05 Jul 2019 3:55PM (Tournament); 6 Readers

T4 Death Black makes double of Red and yellow from B-baulk, hits Red.

Suter still going round, no thought of a triple.

05 Jul 2019 3:56PM (Tournament); 4 Readers

Sorry about that repeat, technology went on a go-slow.

Death picked up break, POPped Yellow thru 1, attempted to POP 2 after 1-back but rejected.

Suter making penult.

05 Jul 2019 4:00PM (Tournament); 6 Readers

Lawn 4 clip update: Carter Red 4, Yellow 2; Death Blue 1, Black 4-back.

Red is left near 4th corner, Blue 8y N of 1st corner, Yellow 3yE of 2nd corner, Black in 3rd corner.

05 Jul 2019 4:03PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Suter has reached 4-back and peg. Diagonal spread.

T5 Carter lifts Yellow to Black, takes off to Red, takes off to Blue, goes off the lawn 1y S of Blue.

05 Jul 2019 4:07PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

T6 Death Blue makes 1 off Yellow, then rushes Yellow into 3rd corner. Makes 2 off Black. Red is still just N of 4th corner, but Death still attempts 4-back peel after 3. Peel fails, Yellow is rushed off 3y N of Red. Yellow croqueted behind 4, Red rushed then croqueted to 5. Makes 4 and rushes Yellow to 3rd corner.

Mulliner missed lift, Suter finishes to win game 1 +17.

05 Jul 2019 4:15PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Death setting up for delayed TP, but take-off to 5 ends up wired from Red. (It swung a yard, apparently.) Blue retires to W bdry.

05 Jul 2019 4:18PM (Tournament); 7 Readers

T7 Carter Yellow ends up over-approaching 2. Retires to Red in A-baulk.
T8 Death Blue hits 15-yarder at Black.

Suter Yellow hits 13-yard double.

Death has picked up break.

05 Jul 2019 4:28PM (Tournament); 11 Readers

Death attempting straight peel at 4-back, gets it. Not ideal posi for an STP, but he's going for it... Rush is short, attempts peel anyway, (3y and angled) gets it!

05 Jul 2019 4:34PM (Tournament); 7 Readers

Death Blue now rushing Black to rover from 2y S of penult. Misses peg, has 7' straightish peel. Black hits both wires, finishes 1" in front of hoop. Half-jump sees Blue and Black off S bdry!

05 Jul 2019 4:37PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Death gave himself a cheer for that half-jump. He's still not finished. Has 4y "rush" on Red, Yellow is near penult. Rush on Yellow to 4 or 5y E of Black. Good take-off!

05 Jul 2019 4:39PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Death has 3y peg-out... misses!
Blue retires to 2nd corner.

Someone (not I) had already posted Death's "win" to croquetscores!

05 Jul 2019 4:42PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

"Normal advanced I might have pegged one out, Super never."
Carter Red has 3-ball break.

Suter is making 9 hoops.

05 Jul 2019 4:44PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Carter Red has made 3 hoops (any more and he'd concede contact).
Crowd quite fancies leaving Blue and Black in 2nd and 4th corners, and join up near peg - might lead to inadvertent peg-out of one ball.

Instead Carter has ignored Blue in 2nd corner, Black is in middle of W bdry, Red and Yellow between 1 and 2 with rush for Red to Black.

05 Jul 2019 4:53PM (Tournament); 9 Readers

Death lifts Black to B-baulk, "rushes" Yellow near 1st corner. Take-off to Red is short, rushes it into B-baulk. Take-off to Blue does not yield rush. Maximum length peg-out attempt!

05 Jul 2019 4:56PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Blue not close to peg, ends up 3y ESE of 4. Black gives himself rush to peg.

Carter has 23-yarder to stay in the match.

05 Jul 2019 4:58PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

Carter misses.

05 Jul 2019 4:59PM (Tournament); 13 Readers

Death wins game 2 +19, and the match 2-0.

05 Jul 2019 5:00PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

Might be getting some Doubles action, but the Manager is in a Plate game on lawn 3.

05 Jul 2019 5:01PM (Tournament); 11 Readers

Lawn 5, Game 2 Suter still 1 & 4-back v Mulliner 1 & 1.
Mulliner has just failed 1 off Suter's 4-back ball.

I'm running low on battery so off to find somewhere to plug in.

05 Jul 2019 5:05PM (Tournament); 9 Readers

I have found power near the hut.
From 70 yards away it looks like Suter has just done the first peel of a standard triple.
Better go and check...

05 Jul 2019 5:16PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Suter has now peeled penult after 6.

My expert reckons Suter failed rover peel before 3-back (or failed to get posi for it). He's in good shape for straight triple peel.

05 Jul 2019 5:35PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Oops, i mean straight rover peel.

05 Jul 2019 5:38PM (Tournament); 7 Readers

Suter lining up rover peel from 1y in front. Peels through, striker's ball ends up nicely in jaws. Should be all over...

05 Jul 2019 5:39PM (Tournament); 7 Readers

Suter wins game 2 +26tp, and the match 2-0.

05 Jul 2019 5:40PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Patel has reached rover and peg in his Plate game, maybe the Doubles Final will start after that finishes.

05 Jul 2019 5:46PM (Tournament); 8 Readers

I am going to close this commentary now.
If the Doubles Final starts tonight, I shall start a new commentary.
Though I also have to find my digs....
