NZ vs AUS Day 4: Chapman and Hakes vs Hockey and G Fletcher by Jarrod Coutts

Welcome to another day of the trans tasman rivalry. Australia holds an 8-4 lead and can seal the test today with a 3-0 win. NZ will be doing everything in it's power to get the test back to 8-7 and give us a chance on the final day. Pete is going to commentate on lawns 6 and 7 today and I'll pop the odd update in for those lawns, but will predominantly focus on this match.

Hakes supershot with Y
Hockey max distance with B
Chapman misses with R into c4 - doesn't look happy about it though, so it must have bee close!
G Fletcher has another hit - he's shot really well this Mac. Has first chance to go round

27 Apr 2017 8:41AM (Tournament); 14 Readers

Greg fell short in his take off to h1.. goes back and joins with partner. NZ has a 13 yarder

27 Apr 2017 8:48AM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Hakes misses the 13 yarder

27 Apr 2017 8:49AM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Gletcher middles his 8 yarder and will have a leave. All 3 courts are looking very Australian right now

27 Apr 2017 8:52AM (Tournament); 13 Readers

Gletcher middles his 8 yarder and will have a leave. All 3 courts are looking very Australian right now

27 Apr 2017 8:52AM (Tournament); 13 Readers

Gletcher middles his 8 yarder and will have a leave. All 3 courts are looking very Australian right now

27 Apr 2017 8:53AM (Tournament); 3 Readers

Hakes corners. Fletcher has a 2y rush to c4 from c3. Oppo balls in 2 and 4

27 Apr 2017 8:59AM (Tournament); 7 Readers

Will be a good turn if he goes round from here

27 Apr 2017 9:00AM (Tournament); 8 Readers

Plays some very good shots and gets a cannon in c2 so this should be first ball round

27 Apr 2017 9:07AM (Tournament); 12 Readers

Kruncher taking over from Couttsie whilst he goes and gets a coffee for Aiken

27 Apr 2017 9:09AM (Tournament); 16 Readers

Greg has clearly been the best shot in the event. That extends to rushing and difficult hoop running

27 Apr 2017 9:10AM (Tournament); 16 Readers

Plays the C2 cannon fairly well and is approaching h2 from 2 yards SW

27 Apr 2017 9:10AM (Tournament); 18 Readers

Greg only sends his h4 pioneer 14 yards N of h4, so will be ignoring the ball in C4 until after making h4

27 Apr 2017 9:15AM (Tournament); 18 Readers

Fundamentally, as long as you keep getting a rush to your hoop, you don't need pioneers because the playing conditions are so easy

27 Apr 2017 9:15AM (Tournament); 20 Readers

Spoiler alert......... After 46 minutes the Kiwis score their first point of the day as Hogan makes h1

27 Apr 2017 9:17AM (Tournament); 19 Readers

After h4, Greg has dug the ball out of C4 by 5 yards and is sending partner to h6, so unlikely to finish

27 Apr 2017 9:19AM (Tournament); 16 Readers

Couttsie returns, bye from me.

27 Apr 2017 9:19AM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Tidy break.. I'll update with the leave

27 Apr 2017 9:22AM (Tournament); 14 Readers

NSL with Chapmans ball at h4

27 Apr 2017 9:30AM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Chapman misses into c4 again.. he had a similar look about the last shot, so it must have been agonisingly close

27 Apr 2017 9:38AM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Hockey playing for a Hogan roll, or as the Aussies have been calling it a 'ICDDTP'

27 Apr 2017 9:41AM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Nearly puts the h3 pioneer off the NB

27 Apr 2017 9:42AM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Nearly puts the h3 pioneer off the NB

27 Apr 2017 9:42AM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Partner is at h4 and after all the hard work will havea delayed TP

27 Apr 2017 9:45AM (Tournament); 22 Readers

Plays some good shots and gets the 4b peel 1/2 way going to h6..

27 Apr 2017 9:50AM (Tournament); 23 Readers

All 3 lawns are again Australian - Fletchi's are game up on the far lawn

27 Apr 2017 9:54AM (Tournament); 26 Readers

Penault peel set up to peel going to 4b.. currently taking off to 3b

27 Apr 2017 9:56AM (Tournament); 29 Readers

Nice turn from Hockey and completes the rover peel, just lining up the peg out for a 26TP no croquet against NZ's strongest pair

27 Apr 2017 10:06AM (Tournament); 32 Readers

It's completed if anyone was in doubt =)

27 Apr 2017 10:07AM (Tournament); 35 Readers

Brucey out there giving it large checking the lawns

27 Apr 2017 10:08AM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Harps has missed 4th turn. Malcolm has a match winning turn to take AUS to 9

27 Apr 2017 10:14AM (Tournament); 29 Readers

Hockey supershot between 5 and peg
Chapman lag with K
Gletcher middles the Y supershot and is going round 3rd turn. It will be a match death shot with a few ducks coming up in approximately 10 minutes for the NZ pair

27 Apr 2017 11:36AM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Hakes takes the shot, hits!

27 Apr 2017 11:36AM (Tournament); 18 Readers

Has a ball round, NSL with the 4b ball at h4

27 Apr 2017 11:36AM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Hockey misses the "short" lift

27 Apr 2017 11:37AM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Finishing turn for Chapman to equalize

27 Apr 2017 11:37AM (Tournament); 17 Readers

AUS has a 9-4 lead after a very good match from the Fletchi brothers - included Malcolm finishing off a wriggle in g2 after initially breaking down on his match winning TP. Hogan and Shilling are game up in the 3rd match with Dumergue taking first break around in g2

27 Apr 2017 11:38AM (Tournament); 18 Readers

Chapman on a standard TP..I'll let you know if anything exciting happens during the turn

27 Apr 2017 11:43AM (Tournament); 22 Readers

He's a bit boring really.. that's the problem with being so good. Same with a few other players at this event

27 Apr 2017 11:43AM (Tournament); 21 Readers

He's a bit boring really.. that's the problem with being so good. Same with a few other players at this event

27 Apr 2017 11:43AM (Tournament); 21 Readers

2nd peel jawsed after 6...

27 Apr 2017 11:52AM (Tournament); 20 Readers

rover peel done going to 3b..

27 Apr 2017 11:58AM (Tournament); 25 Readers

17TP and we have a 3rd

27 Apr 2017 12:04PM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Hogans missed so Forster has an equalizing TP in g2

27 Apr 2017 12:05PM (Tournament); 29 Readers

Forster finishes so we have a 3rd game. Australia now only 2 games away from winning the test with a day to spare. NZ must win both of these to have a chance tomorrow

27 Apr 2017 12:34PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Game 3: Chapman/Hakes vs Hockey/Gletcher

Chapman Y supershot
Hockey max distance with K

27 Apr 2017 12:35PM (Tournament); 21 Readers

Chapman goes to c3

27 Apr 2017 12:36PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Hit's on his 3rd attempt.. cut's it to 1yNE of h4 so I'd expect that will be a ball round

27 Apr 2017 12:36PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Hampered after h1 and h2 pioneer is in the yard line 3yS of c2. I don't like his chances in this one

27 Apr 2017 12:39PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Has to play it as a sweep

27 Apr 2017 12:40PM (Tournament); 22 Readers

Very good sweep and hit's the reception ball 5 yards away

27 Apr 2017 12:40PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Did the hard part of making h2, but an average croquet stroke and rush followed possibly by a hill, means there is a clip on h3

27 Apr 2017 12:55PM (Tournament); 21 Readers

Fletcher hit's 4th turn and is going round in control approaching h3

27 Apr 2017 12:56PM (Tournament); 20 Readers

sill in control.. approaching 1b and looks like it will be an NSL wtih Hakes' h1 ball at h4

27 Apr 2017 1:04PM (Tournament); 22 Readers

Good NSL. Chapman looking for his doubles partner to discuss their options

27 Apr 2017 1:12PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

The partner appears and to no surprise, the h4 ball is lifted and goes to c3

27 Apr 2017 1:18PM (Tournament); 22 Readers

The partner appears and to no surprise, the h4 ball is lifted and goes to c3

27 Apr 2017 1:18PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Takes his time, but it wasn't enough

27 Apr 2017 1:18PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

MIsses and Hockey has a delayed TP to take Australia to 10 match points

27 Apr 2017 1:18PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

He's done the hard part and has made h1. Mletcher is beside me and reckons we are going to see another ICDDTP

27 Apr 2017 1:21PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Plays the hogan roll and falls within inches of the WB

27 Apr 2017 1:23PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Dribbles at his 8 yarder on partner and cuts it closer to h2

27 Apr 2017 1:24PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Grovels through h2 and snicks the shot - played it pretty quickly so it wasn't too hampered

27 Apr 2017 1:24PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Standard TP for the match point now

27 Apr 2017 1:25PM (Tournament); 22 Readers

Standard TP for the match point now

27 Apr 2017 1:25PM (Tournament); 22 Readers

Make that a delayed TP

27 Apr 2017 1:28PM (Tournament); 25 Readers

Forster missed the lift on lawn 5, so Hogan has a delayed TP or a ball to the peg to keep NZ's hopes alive. Get it to the peg Joe. Put the pressure on them to hit.

27 Apr 2017 1:29PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

4b jawsed going to h6

27 Apr 2017 1:31PM (Tournament); 27 Readers

Rush peeled after 6 and sent to 2b

27 Apr 2017 1:36PM (Tournament); 22 Readers

Doesn't get the peel going to 4b as it hit the E wire and will be a straight double

27 Apr 2017 1:42PM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Doesn't rush in front on the penault ball so NZ will have one more shot and Aus will finish penault and peg

27 Apr 2017 1:45PM (Tournament); 27 Readers

It's a diagonal, diagonal spread, NZ will have a 16 yarder for the lift

27 Apr 2017 1:49PM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Chapman heads to A baulk.. penault and peg vs his h3 and hakes h1. Oppo are level with h5 on EB

27 Apr 2017 1:52PM (Tournament); 30 Readers

Chapman hits and gives NZ a ray of hope

27 Apr 2017 1:53PM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Shilling also hit Forsters leave.. so on lawn 5 it's 4b and 1 vs 4b and 1. NZ now have the innings with the 4b ball

27 Apr 2017 1:53PM (Tournament); 30 Readers

Chapman had a bit of an interesting pickup, but is back in control now

27 Apr 2017 2:01PM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Currently approaching h5 on a break to 4b in g3. Hakes on h1 and Hockey/Gletcher on peg and penault respectively

27 Apr 2017 2:01PM (Tournament); 18 Readers

It will be an NSL with the peg ball at h4

27 Apr 2017 2:04PM (Tournament); 15 Readers

Approaching 2b..

27 Apr 2017 2:04PM (Tournament); 15 Readers

27 Apr 2017 2:08PM (Tournament); 17 Readers

27 Apr 2017 2:14PM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Hakes has a standard TP to take the match but he's off for a tinkle first

27 Apr 2017 2:14PM (Tournament); 17 Readers

Hogan has made it through h1 but gone off the lawn in a croquet stroke and given Dumergue (h1) the innings and a break can be developed with a few good shots

27 Apr 2017 2:15PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

BANG

27 Apr 2017 2:19PM (Tournament); 16 Readers

Hakes goes off the lawn in his second shot and gives Gletcher a 1 yarder with a ball in lawn to run his 2 hoops and peg out..

27 Apr 2017 2:19PM (Tournament); 16 Readers

Australia now have to players on the lawn playing winning turns which will seal the test for them

27 Apr 2017 2:20PM (Tournament); 16 Readers

now have two*

27 Apr 2017 2:23PM (Tournament); 18 Readers

Greg is about to seal the first

27 Apr 2017 2:23PM (Tournament); 17 Readers

6 yard peg out as he had to take partner to rover and then finished with a 4y return after rover which was cut the wrong way

27 Apr 2017 2:30PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Well done Simon and Greg.

AUS 10 NZ 4

27 Apr 2017 2:35PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

Australia has the innings in g3 between Hogan and Shilling.. but NZ has just gone to a dumb position so Dumey could have a winning turn
