NZ vs USA Day 2: Shilling and Hogan vs Huneycutt and Morgan by Jarrod Coutts

Hogan R
ShillingY
Huneycutt K
Morgan B

Hogan to EB

19 Apr 2017 9:06AM (Tournament); 25 Readers

K just out of C2

19 Apr 2017 9:07AM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Y middles the shot on the EB and Shilling takes croquet for the first time in the Mac! =) Hogan comes on to discuss the leave

19 Apr 2017 9:08AM (Tournament); 22 Readers

The Kiwis leave the ball in c2 and set a tight rush to it. Morgan heads to c3 and misses into 4th corner. A few good shots required for Shilling to get the break out

19 Apr 2017 9:13AM (Tournament); 26 Readers

Good rush to c2 from Shilling followed by a good rush to h1 and is approaching from 1yS. Gets a forward rush, but still has a 1 good shot required for the break

19 Apr 2017 9:17AM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Shilling approaches h2 from the EB while loading h3 and ignores the ball in c2. Doesn't get it, but hits the 9 yarder in c2 and will have a second go at it

19 Apr 2017 9:23AM (Tournament); 37 Readers

Good approach leaving him 4ft 15degrees.. fails the hoop

19 Apr 2017 9:24AM (Tournament); 37 Readers

Huneycutt has a go at the 12 yarder from h3 at the reception ball on the NB by h2.. misses leaving Hogan a rush and another ball inlawn by H2

19 Apr 2017 9:26AM (Tournament); 38 Readers

Hogan hits his rush and has now also taken Croquet this Mac! Should go round from here

19 Apr 2017 9:28AM (Tournament); 36 Readers

Good rush to h1, makes H1 with control and has the break fully laid out now

19 Apr 2017 9:30AM (Tournament); 37 Readers

Hogan grovels through H3 and reception ball is 8yS of the hoop so this may be the end of his turn leaving USA a choice of 8 yarders with a ball in lawn

19 Apr 2017 9:33AM (Tournament); 38 Readers

Aborts to c2

Shilling H2 and 8yS of h3
Hogan h4 and in c2
Huneycutt h1 and 1y N of h4
Morgan h1 and in c4

19 Apr 2017 9:34AM (Tournament); 36 Readers

Shilling shoots at partner in c2.. misses by a yard. Morgan coming on the lawn and needs a few good shots for a break, but in these conditions you need to go round off every opportunity

19 Apr 2017 9:39AM (Tournament); 36 Readers

Morgan takes off out from c4 to the balls at c2. Options for either Shilling or Hogan to play.. possible easier pickup and better clip positions if Hogan plays

19 Apr 2017 9:44AM (Tournament); 43 Readers

Shilling plays and has made h2 with work still needed for a break in addition to a good rush to H3

19 Apr 2017 9:44AM (Tournament); 45 Readers

Shilling has made h3 and got a rush back towards a ball near h2. The last ball is in c4 so a few good rushes/1 good approach and he should have the break

19 Apr 2017 9:48AM (Tournament); 48 Readers

Rushes ball to 10yN of C4 and croquets it off the SB going to the ball in c4 so Huneycutt will have the innings and a chance to go round

19 Apr 2017 9:52AM (Tournament); 49 Readers

Huneycutt plays some good shots, but is hampered after h1. Looks OK as he hasn't called a ref, but fails misses the reception ball

19 Apr 2017 9:55AM (Tournament); 46 Readers

Nice little 10 minute break to get the peg straight. That's a giraffe!

19 Apr 2017 10:00AM (Tournament); 47 Readers

Good roquet from Shilling followed by an average croquet shot where he tickled the ball he wanted to get a rush on means it's a lot harder to get the break

19 Apr 2017 10:04AM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Good take off from the SB to h4 and a good hoop means Shilling now has the break laid out. Needs to go to 4b on this

19 Apr 2017 10:08AM (Tournament); 47 Readers

Shilling has made it to 4b and is currently setting the leave.. will have to do it Skinley style as he's overun 3b

19 Apr 2017 10:29AM (Tournament); 49 Readers

It's an NSL with Morgans h1 ball at 3b and Huneycutts h2 ball over by h2

19 Apr 2017 10:29AM (Tournament); 47 Readers

3b ball isn't in great position so he can't put his final positional shot leaving Hogan as normal or it will be wide open. Kiwi's discussing what to do

19 Apr 2017 10:34AM (Tournament); 49 Readers

the 3b ball I'm guessing is open on the EB ball as they are doing something bizarre! Shilling was just S of the 3b ball and has played a scatter which has sent the 3b ball into c2 and he has finished off the EB peg high which is a very good result considering what it could have been

19 Apr 2017 10:37AM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Morgan hits is 12 yarder from c2 at partner and needs an OK takeoff and good rush to H1 for the break

19 Apr 2017 10:37AM (Tournament); 49 Readers

Doesn't make H1 and joins up with partner

19 Apr 2017 10:53AM (Tournament); 52 Readers

Hogan turns down a 14 yarder at 2 balls and goes to c4 with partner peg high on the EB. I'm very surprised about that

19 Apr 2017 10:53AM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Morgan makes 1 and 2 off partner, but doesn't get a rush to h3.. takes off to the ball in c4 and leaves himself an 8 yarder...

19 Apr 2017 10:55AM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Middles it. Good recovery shot

19 Apr 2017 10:55AM (Tournament); 48 Readers

Morgan 4y backwards takeoff to h3.. with a ball near c4. Good takeoff and has a 1yard hoop

19 Apr 2017 10:58AM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Gets a rush so only a few good shots left to have the break laid out

19 Apr 2017 10:58AM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Still in G1 with Huneycutt currently on a TP after getting the 4b peel in the jaws from H4 and currently approaching H5

19 Apr 2017 11:30AM (Tournament); 56 Readers

Maybe it doesn't rush peel as the H6 pioneer has gone deeper than it would have if it was an easy peel

19 Apr 2017 11:31AM (Tournament); 55 Readers

Finished the turn with a reverse spread and USA is now penault and peg vs 4b and 4

19 Apr 2017 12:00PM (Tournament); 46 Readers

Shilling hits the lift but then takes off out. Morgan has a chance to close g1 out after 3.5 hours

19 Apr 2017 12:23PM (Tournament); 56 Readers

All sorts has happened since the last commentary..

19 Apr 2017 1:09PM (Tournament); 47 Readers

Morgan had a finishing turn but didn't get a rush out of rover to his peg ball which was 6yNW of the peg.. took off to the 4th ball near h3 and didn't get a rush to the peg ball. When trying to get a rush to the peg for the 3rd time, he dribbled into it and missed the peg out

19 Apr 2017 1:11PM (Tournament); 42 Readers

Shilling hit the 10 yard pressure shot and the current situation is;
Shilling on the peg
Hogan on h4
Morgan in the box
Huneycutt on peg alone and is 3yWSE of c3

NZ currently deciding where to lay up

19 Apr 2017 1:13PM (Tournament); 42 Readers

Lays up on the SB level with h5 when trying to get closer to c1

19 Apr 2017 1:19PM (Tournament); 46 Readers

Lays up on the SB level with h5 when trying to get closer to c1

19 Apr 2017 1:19PM (Tournament); 45 Readers

Huneycutt takes the shot at the peg and misses to 3yE of c1

19 Apr 2017 1:20PM (Tournament); 44 Readers

Hogan has a 7 yarder at oppo for the break, or a 1ft rush. I know what option I'd be taking!

19 Apr 2017 1:21PM (Tournament); 43 Readers

The players take neither, they've chosen option C. LUNCH.
This could be up to an hour before the fun continues!

19 Apr 2017 1:21PM (Tournament); 46 Readers

Congratulations to Hogan who's just called his wife Robyn to say hello on their 25th Wedding anniversary. That's as long as I've been alive!!

19 Apr 2017 1:37PM (Tournament); 44 Readers

The players are hydrating and the tournament director has just suggested that they may not want to use the entire hour for the lunch break. I reckon let the suspense build!

19 Apr 2017 1:46PM (Tournament); 48 Readers

We are underway again

19 Apr 2017 1:55PM (Tournament); 48 Readers

Hogan rushes to H4 and lays up wired from the peg ball

19 Apr 2017 1:55PM (Tournament); 48 Readers

Huneycutt misses at the peg to 1yW of C3

19 Apr 2017 1:56PM (Tournament); 49 Readers

Hogan has made h4 and has a 2.5y Rush to H5 if he wants it

19 Apr 2017 1:57PM (Tournament); 52 Readers

Not a great decision by Hogan - lays up S of H4 and hasn't guarded the shot for the peg ball. I blame the manager!

19 Apr 2017 1:58PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Not a great decision by Hogan - lays up S of H4 and hasn't guarded the shot for the peg ball. I blame the manager!

19 Apr 2017 1:58PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Huneycutt hits the free shot at the peg. USA takes the first game +10 after nearly 5 hours including lunch

19 Apr 2017 2:00PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Hoop 1 is 'too tight' so is being reset. That's a shame. We'll be another 5 minutes before the fun continues in g2

19 Apr 2017 2:05PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Hoop 1 is 'too tight' so is being reset. That's a shame. We'll be another 5 minutes before the fun continues in g2

19 Apr 2017 2:05PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Game 2:
Huneycutt to EB peg high
Shilling S of C2
Morgan misses Huneycutt to 3yN of c4

19 Apr 2017 2:20PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Hogan takes an interesting shot - shoots at Huneycutts EB ball to give USA the innings after he missed

19 Apr 2017 2:22PM (Tournament); 57 Readers

Huneycutt doesn't get going and lays up in c4 with Shilling at h1 and Hogan 5yE of h3. Shilling misses the balls near c4

19 Apr 2017 2:28PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Huneycutt doesn't get going and lays up in c4 with Shilling at h1 and Hogan 5yE of h3. Shilling misses the balls near c4

19 Apr 2017 2:28PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Huneycutt over approaches H1 from 3y

19 Apr 2017 2:30PM (Tournament); 53 Readers

Shilling hits a 25 yarder with two balls near H1 so you won't get a better chance at a first ball round than this one. Just a shame he's having to take off 30 yards to get to his target ball

19 Apr 2017 2:33PM (Tournament); 54 Readers

Really nice pick up an is in complete control approaching H4

19 Apr 2017 2:45PM (Tournament); 59 Readers

Still going nicely.. I'll update when it gets to the leave

19 Apr 2017 2:52PM (Tournament); 53 Readers

It's going to be a spread with Morgan on the WB and Huneycutt at the peg

19 Apr 2017 3:02PM (Tournament); 44 Readers

Was looking like a really nice controlled turn until he's hampered himself on the peg to get the rush to the EB. Hits it fine but means he is rolling it into position rather than rushing off the lawn. Still, I'll take the clip on 4B and that will be a good nerve settler for Chris to have a really controlled turn.

19 Apr 2017 3:08PM (Tournament); 43 Readers

Another hampered shot to end the turn. Rolling both balls towards the EB and ends up very close together once they are lined in, but copes.

Shilling 4b
Everything else on H1

19 Apr 2017 3:11PM (Tournament); 45 Readers

Huneycutt goes straight to c3 and hits the gap finishing 1ftW of c4. Big turn in the scheme of the match. What is smoking Joe gonna do for us?

19 Apr 2017 3:12PM (Tournament); 42 Readers

Doesn't get a rush to H1 isn't the best start and is approaching from WB 13YS of c2. Playing it with a thick takeoff I think

19 Apr 2017 3:15PM (Tournament); 40 Readers

Aborts back to partner and NZ keeps the innings

19 Apr 2017 3:16PM (Tournament); 41 Readers

Morgan goes 1ft S of C3

19 Apr 2017 3:18PM (Tournament); 44 Readers

A bit of interaction and Hogan now has a chance for a break. Has a canon in C4 with another ball inlawn near H6

19 Apr 2017 3:35PM (Tournament); 30 Readers

Is approaching h1 from 7ySE. Leaves a 2ft 10 degrees H1

19 Apr 2017 3:36PM (Tournament); 31 Readers

Fails h1. Huneycutt has a 5 yarder with 2 balls at h1

19 Apr 2017 3:37PM (Tournament); 33 Readers

Fails h1. Huneycutt has a 5 yarder with 2 balls at h1

19 Apr 2017 3:37PM (Tournament); 32 Readers

Huneycutt fails h2 off partner

19 Apr 2017 3:41PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

Apologies everyone about the delay. Battery and wifi problems didn't help the situation and boy you missed out on some fun! I'll try and summarise some of the interesting lines of play from both teams for you

19 Apr 2017 10:53PM (Tournament); 11 Readers

I ran out of fingers, toes and other players fingers and toes to count the turn, but it eventually got to the point where this was the clippage;

Hogan h3
Shilling 4b

Huneycutt 3b
Morgan peg

19 Apr 2017 10:54PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

Huneycutt over/underapproached 3b and the game went to pieces for a while

19 Apr 2017 10:55PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

Eventually Hogan had the innings and after multiple turns to get from h1 to h3, finally played a good turn to finish;

Hogan: Peg
Shilling: 4b
Huneycutt: 3b
Morgan: box

19 Apr 2017 10:56PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

at this point, the match had been going nearly 9 hours and NZ was finally in control. The leave was, NZ near c2 and peg high on WB with Huneycutt being 7yS of 4b

19 Apr 2017 10:56PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

Huneycutt took his lift and hit the ball in c2 and played a very good shot to get this 1yN of 4b and getting a rush pointing somewhere close to h1 which he cut well to 3yE of h5 on the SB for his approach to 3b

19 Apr 2017 10:57PM (Tournament); 13 Readers

Good approach to 3b and had his reception ball approximately 10yN of 3b

19 Apr 2017 10:58PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

runs the hoop too well - right to the middle of his ball at 4b and reception ball, then missed the 9y return at his reception ball

19 Apr 2017 10:58PM (Tournament); 12 Readers

NZ then take the very interesting option of moving the ball near 4b and leaving the reception ball 10ishyN of 3b leaving Huneycutt approximately a 15y rush to 4b

19 Apr 2017 11:00PM (Tournament); 10 Readers

Huneycutt hits another good pressure shot but it's a roquet rather than a rush. Plays a very good croquet stroke approach and runs the 5ft 4b off the NB leaving him some sort of 4y rush to penault. Doesn't hit this in the middle and cuts it to 1ft SE of 4b. Over approaches penault so cant even have a shot at the hoop and takes position

19 Apr 2017 11:02PM (Tournament); 10 Readers

At this point, NZ walk onto the lawn with the peg ball 1y E of the peg, the 4b ball in C1 and Huneycutt sitting 6" in front of penault

19 Apr 2017 11:02PM (Tournament); 10 Readers

It's now been over 10 hours since the match has started and the sprinklers are about to come on (huge sigh and possibly some tears) so the game has to be pegged down at 7.30

19 Apr 2017 11:03PM (Tournament); 10 Readers

I'll get back to this one when/if it is continued, but USA currently hold a commanding 4-1 lead in addition to being game up and in a strong position in g2 of this match. Still chances for the Kiwi's and I look forward to being able to keep you in the loop with the matches tomorrow!

19 Apr 2017 11:04PM (Tournament); 9 Readers

The marathon continues

20 Apr 2017 4:44PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

NZ take the second game to force the decider. Huneycutt made it to rover and Shilling played very well to finish in 2 turns and force the decider

20 Apr 2017 4:45PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

Game 3:

Shilling is taking the first break round with all other clips on h5

20 Apr 2017 4:47PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

h1*

20 Apr 2017 4:47PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

Currently approaching h6 and in control. It's been a really good day for Shilling so far

20 Apr 2017 4:52PM (Tournament); 27 Readers

Doesn't get a good finish to the leave and USA have a double along the EB

20 Apr 2017 5:18PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Morgan hits yet another lift

20 Apr 2017 5:22PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

He's a pretty damm good shot! I can see why he's one so much recently

20 Apr 2017 5:23PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Not as great at running hoops though as he's failed h1

20 Apr 2017 5:23PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Was making h1 off partner so NZ has a long shot

20 Apr 2017 5:25PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Shilling misses the 18 yarder from h2

20 Apr 2017 5:25PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Morgan plays a good pickup and is currently approaching h6 in control

20 Apr 2017 5:26PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Something went wrong with the leave - Chapman and I think the ball at h4 is open

20 Apr 2017 5:40PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

Clips and positions

Morgan 4b and R in c4
Huneycutt h1 Y on EB peg high

Hogan B h1 on WB
Shilling 4b K N of h4

20 Apr 2017 5:43PM (Tournament); 21 Readers

Lift Hogans ball and goes to the edge of A baulk to take the short shot at the 4b ball

20 Apr 2017 5:45PM (Tournament); 20 Readers

Restalks due to some intelligent spectators

20 Apr 2017 5:45PM (Tournament); 20 Readers

Misses into c4. USA should make a very strong leave now

20 Apr 2017 5:45PM (Tournament); 21 Readers

USA lays up on EB with balls at 1 and 2

20 Apr 2017 6:01PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

NZ must have thought he couldn't go round as they haven't shot and he's gone into a corner

20 Apr 2017 6:01PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

Huneycutt is now just going round. That's disappointing (for the NZ fans)

20 Apr 2017 6:03PM (Tournament); 21 Readers

setting up the delayed TP and is in control approaching h5

20 Apr 2017 6:08PM (Tournament); 19 Readers

First peel completed. 1b pioneer is 1y off the NB. Approaching h6 from 5yW

20 Apr 2017 6:12PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Good shot and gets a northwards rush

20 Apr 2017 6:12PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Gets the penault peel and is rushing to 2b from N of the peg

20 Apr 2017 6:17PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Fails 2b badly after a good approach

20 Apr 2017 6:17PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

We think it's Hogans h1 ball that is the reception ball

20 Apr 2017 6:18PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

NZ players are shaking hands

20 Apr 2017 6:18PM (Tournament); 23 Readers

Whats the SP?

20 Apr 2017 6:21PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Shilling looks like he's going to peg. Will he look for the rover peel?

20 Apr 2017 6:21PM (Tournament); 24 Readers

Shilling doing a little dance

20 Apr 2017 6:26PM (Tournament); 27 Readers

His level of focus is very impressive, but he hasn't been the fastest player in the world

20 Apr 2017 6:26PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

Rover ball is currently 3yN of rover

20 Apr 2017 6:27PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

Needs to be a good rush to guarantee an attempt at the peel is my guess

20 Apr 2017 6:28PM (Tournament); 29 Readers

Stalks the 1ft rush from level with 6

20 Apr 2017 6:28PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

It's 1y straight.. big decision

20 Apr 2017 6:29PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

20 Apr 2017 6:30PM (Tournament); 29 Readers

20 Apr 2017 6:31PM (Tournament); 28 Readers

20 Apr 2017 6:43PM (Tournament); 26 Readers

I think it's still 50:50 at this stage as to who's favourite

20 Apr 2017 6:43PM (Tournament); 26 Readers
