3. Play the semi-finals (Block winners vs opposite-block runners-up)
4. Play the final
5. Concurrently with (3) and (4):
a. Finish remaining pegged-down games (there were nine in all!)

Looking at the weather forecast for the day (which looked remarkably similar to the one that preceded Fridays downpour), the manager decided that it was too risky to schedule semi-finals as well as a final - if the lawns were flooded again then there would be a real possibility that the event could not be finished at all. So it was decided before play began that once steps 1 and 2 were completed then we would proceed directly to the final. Steps 4 and 5 would also proceed as planned.

After the blocks and the "affecting" pegged-down games had been finished the finalists emerged as Jonathan Lamb and Andy Dibben , and they started play directly after lunch. Simultaneously, all the other players began finishing all the other pegged down games. Unfortunately, after this task had been completed, there was simply no appetite for any more play, and almost everyone wanted to head for home. So that is what happened: the final was watched by a "crowd" consisting of The tournament Manager, the Tournament Referee, one player waiting for a lift back home from his wife, (who had gone sight-seeing) and a band of enthusiastic locals from the Sidmouth club.

The Final was won +17 by Jonathan Lamb, our man in Uruguay. [ Well, he is for the 6 months of the year he lives there: in the summer he lives in Canterbury, where he is an enthusiastic and active member of their Croquet Club. ] Congratulations to him, and commiserations to Andy.
Roll on next year
