Nottingham GC Open 2016- Notes on Format by Will Gee

Field of 16 players. 2 Blocks of 8. Top 4 go through to quarter finals. In the event of 1 or more players being tied on game wins for fourth place (i.e. determining whether they qualify for the Knockout Stages or not) a play off of some description will be used to determine who progresses to the final stages. In the event, there was a tie for fourth place (Balchin vs King)- King was technically fourth in the block by who beat who, but a single 13 point game decider was played.

The first game of the quarter finals was played on the Saturday evening, to protect against the possibility of 9 games on Sunday.

In all- 8 games were played on Saturday (barring Balchin, who played 9 including playoffs), with a possibility of 8 further games on Sunday.

The plate will be contested by those who did not qualify to the knockout stages. The bottom 4 from each block will play a cross block against the bottom 4 ranked players from the other block, with games against the other 3 non-qualifying players being carried forward from the original blocks. At the end of those 4 cross block games on Sunday, plate players will be ranked 1-8 by standard methods (games / who beat who / net hoops). The top 4 will contest the semi finals of the plate, the lower 4 will play off for positions (all single 13 point games). This guarantees 6 for the plate contestants
