Central Veterans GC Handicap Doubles by Michael Hardman

In Section II in the morning three pairs finished with identical number of wins (2) and net points (+3). Because more than two pairs tied, the second clause of New Zealand Tournament Regulation 27.7.4.2 does not apply and the third clause in this case requires a play-off. The full Bagnall-Wild method using full games would require two extra rounds and could not be fitted into the time available. On the other hand the players in this section had finished their three games of Section Play much earlier than some other sections, so there was time available for a shorter playoff to decide positions. We decided to do a three way playoff of one-hoop games, where all players started in corner 1 (blue corner in AC) and the first to run hoop 13 won that part of the playoff. The coin toss was not particularly crucial because most players did not reach hoop 13 on their first shot. After each pair had played the other two pairs they had all won once and there was still a three-way tie! So we repeated the exercise and fortunately Jenny and Pat beat both the other pairs, Robin and Chris won once and the ranking order for progress to the Post-Section blocks was established. The general agreement was that this was a fair way to decide positions in the limited time available.
