Toronto Annual Association Carnival
Toronto AC Carnival by Alix Verge
Results for the three blocks of singles should have started flowing yesterday. Unfortunately, after an overnight deluge, all that was flowing was the ponded surface water draining off the four lawns (which had been so magnificently fast in practice on the Monday afternoon). Luckily we had no rain over Tuesday night so the matches were able to be started this morning on three of the four lawns.
To accommodate the games in only 2 days they have been reduced to two hour time limits. Blocks A and B are advanced play and Block C is advanced handicap format. I am only able to comment on Block A (at least at this stage).
John Levick is in top form and using a great looking aluminium mallet made by Peter Coles (Forster?). I think we wll be seeing many more of these in the future. Pam Gentle is roqueting sensationally but had some bad luck in her first match which let John Levick in for a win. On the same lawn I played John Fransen who pt on a burst of speed - and very good play - to race out to a 14-0 lead. Thankfully I came good in the end but still could not manage an error free break and gave up the innings after the bell wasting 2 peels but leaving tough lift shots. I was so busy trying to roquet that I saw none of the Hicks/Black game, but im obviously handled the conditions far better than I did!!!

Jim Hicks is roaring through A block and is so far undefeated having sent Levick and Verge off with tails between their legs. In the handicap block C a couple of players have broken through trigger points and had their handicaps reduced - although the revised draw of 4 x 2hour games a day is pretty gruelling on blocks B and C where so many games are stretching to time and beyond. Two opponents doggedly stuck with their game well into what I would call "dark" last night. I have no idea how they saw the balls they were aiming at.
