Morning all, I'm sat next to lawn 10 commentating on the 5 games going on on lawns 9, 10 and 11. They are:

Lawn 9: Wicks v Kibble (primary), Brown v Avery (secondary)
Lawn 10: Wilkinson v Grimsley
Lawn 11: Trimmer v RM Smith (primary), Death v Noble (secondary)

Games just getting underway, as a small group of spectators settle themselves - several locals and some of the American visitors acting as cheerleaders for the day

Lawn 10: Wilkinson (B) tried a supershot and didn't touch any furniture; this was placed end of B baulk. Grimsley (R) rolled both to W boundary peg high. Wilkinson hits with K and rushes partner to H1; fails hoop. Grimsley (Y) shoots at oppo balls and runs H1 peg high; hits return roquet.

Lawn 9: Robin Brown (G, Br) has the early break v Avery (P, W). Wicks (UK) and Kibble (RY) yet to see any real break.

Lawn 11: George Noble (P,W) has got the first break vs Death (G,Br) with white. Trimmer (RY) failed H1 with R, and Richard Smith (UK) is getting going with blue.

Lawn 9: Kibble is digging out a break with red; Brown is going to 4b with green. A reminder that the format for the early knockout is Super-Advanced, best of 3.

Lawn 11: Noble over-approaches 3b with white and sticks the angled hoop, with Br and P nearby. Gr is next to H2. Death is going to take contact with Gr off white. Does anyone know the shorthand abbreviations for secondary colours?

Lawn 10: Grimsley walks off the lawn having blobbed H3 with Y. Wilkinson playing B misses K in C2, and Grimsley looks to run H3 to R and H4.

Lawn 9: Brown's contact leave: Pink and white across C4 (around 11 yards apart), Gr in C3, Br in C2. Kibble had a hampered shot after H2; shoots and misses at Y north of H2, leaving easy hit in for Wixy's B nearby.

Lawn 11: Death blobs in H2 with Gr; Noble shoots P from H3 at Gr, missing. Meanwhile, RM Smith is progressing serenely around the double bankers.

Lawn 9: Avery (P) takes off from Gr in C3 to Br in C2; he's for H2. Rolls up, and makes the hoop. Wixy is making a break with B.

Lawn 10: Grimsley back in with Y, has made H5 with nothing ahead of him.

Lawn 9: Avery sticks in H3 with pink.
Lawn 11: Death hits in with Gr to P and W on north boundary near H3. He is for H4.

I think Death is aiming to QPO Noble over three turns, as white was for penult at the start of this current turn, having been for 3b and 4b in his two previous turns
... is there a suitable acronym for this (think NZTPO?)?

Lawn 9: Wixy is in a break with U and has just popped Y through H1 on the way to H5.

Brown is making 3b with Gr... clearly he stopped at 3b not at 4b earlier, my apologies. Presumably to prevent an Avery TPO. He misses reception ball 4 yards N of C4 after the hoop, leaving P on N boundary behind H3 and W a few yards N of H1.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson hit the lift and is making H1 with U off partner,
after Grimsley stopped at H6 with Y and made a leave.

Lawn 11: Death has peeled W through penult and is making 2b. RM Smith is making his contact leave having made 3b. More details to follow.

Lawn 9: Avery missed at oppo near C4 with W. Brown is attempting to pick up a break with Br, his H1 ball. Wixy looks like he might have got the second POP on Y, and is approaching 3b now.

Lawn 11: Richard Smith's contact leave: Y in C2, R 2 yards N of C4, K on E bdy level with H3 and U in C3. Death continuing merrily in his break, attempting rover peel on W before penult (he has P as escape ball).

Lawn 10: Wilkinson is approaching H5 with U; he looks like he'll be stopping at H6.
Lawn 11: Brown didn't get going, joined in C4. Avery hits in with pink at oppo. Wixy has gone to 4b with U, POPing Y to H3. His contact leave: R 3 yards N of C4, K 7 yards N of C1, Y in C2 and U on W bdy level with 6.

Lawn 11: Death has an angled straight rover peel on W to complete his 3 turn QPO. Trimmer is attempting to get going off the contact with Y, and has approached H1 with partner. Sticks in H1.

Lawn 9: Kibble takes contact with R and make H2; he has made H3 off U and is doing a take off peel on oppo going to Y N of H2... is this madness to attempt a TPO with no break ahead of him?!Meanwhilte,
Avery has made H6 with P

Lawn 11: Death completes multi-turn QPO, leaves Br 2 yards W of C4 and sends Gr to C3. Noble takes contact in C3. RM Smith shoots from nr H4 at Trimmer's balls around H1; misses.

Lawn 10: Some interactivity here after Wilkinson failed to get going after Grimsley missed the lift shot.

Lawn 9: Kibble manages to approach H4 with R and grovels through; can't see deep reception ball (K) on boundary, shoots and misses at Y just off W bdy a few yards N of H1. Avery is approaching 3b.

Lawn 11: Noble had a 11-12 yarder at Death's ball outside C4; hits it, rolls up to H1 and sticks. Death hits in. Trimmer gets going with Y.

Lawn 9: Wixy took his lift with K and is getting going; only has a double peel to take the first game. Avery finishes his turn on 4b with a contact leave of his balls in C2 and C3, and Brown's balls across C4.
Lawn 10: Wilkinson is on break with U and approaching 2b.

Lawn 11: Death on 3 ball break to take game 1. Trimmer trying a TPO against RM Smith; jawses 4b after 3.

Lawn 9: Brown lays up in C1 off contact. Avery shoots W from outside C2 at P in C3; hits. Wixy coming up to H5 on his break, peelee next to penult.
Lawn 10: Wilkinson misses return roquet after 3b, giving all the balls to Grimsley around H4.

Lawn 11: Death takes game 1 +13TPO. Trimmer looking to rush peel oppo through 4b before H6.

Lawn 9: Avery makes H1 off Br; Gr is S of H1 and P is just outside C3. Will have to work to pick up this break. Wixy is approaching 2b with one peel left.

Lawn 10: Grimsley makes a leave. Wilkinson shooting with K from S of H1 at oppo S of H4, misses.

Lawn 10: Grimsley is taking forward ball (Y) round.

Lawn 11: Trimmer approaching 1b with Y, one peel done on K. Noble and Death are nowhere to be seen; presumably taking a breather before game 2.

Lawn 9: Avery digs out break with W and gets 4b peel on partner going to Br just south of C3. Has a tood H4 pioneer. Wixy has all peels done and finishing his break.

Lawn 9: Wixy wins first game v Kibble, +20.

Summary so far:
Lawn 9: Wixy game up vs Kibble +20, Avery on TP to win first game.
Lawn 10: Grimsley v Wilkinson, about to be even - 1 and 4b plays 1 and 4b.
Lawn 11: Death game up on Noble +13TPO, Trimmer on a TPO vs RM Smith.

Lawn 9: Wixy vs Kibble game 2: Colours the same. Wixy to E bdy, Kibble to C2, Wixy a few yards N of partner. Kibble misses long lift to outside C4. Avery has 2 peels done, and is on 2b.

Lawn 10: Grimsley finishes turn with Y on 4b, has a spread.
Lawn 11: Trimmer peels U through penult going to 4b.

Lawn 9: Wixy with U, is on first break v Kibble. Avery wins first game v Brown, +17tp.

Lawn 10, Wilkinson misses long lift to C4; Grimsley blobs H1 off U; Wilkinson retreats to partner in C4.
Lawn 11: Trimmer got a nice Irish peel on oppo at rover, but it goes very deep. Should have no problem with the peg out though.

Lawn 9: Avery v Brown game 2: Avery to E bdy, Brown duffer, Avery hits parner and rolls both balls in to lawn. Hasn't quite got the rush to H1.

Lawn 11: Trimmer completes TPO, goes off in C2 with partner just outside C4.

Lawn 9: Avery takes off from mid-lawn in to the back of H1; retreats to C4. Brown making a double at Gr and W from B baulk, hits W. Wixy smashes through difficult 1b with U beyond reception ball
; it runs hard down to Y at 2back.

Lawn 11: RM Smith rolls up to H1, and I think shoots and clangs off to the side. Trimmer joins up with partner near C2; Smith shoots and hits R to N bdy; Y in C2.

Lawn 9: Wixy goes round the lawn before eventually rushing parner to 5 yards ESE of 2b. Take off to 2b and runs it to bdy. Brown is making a break with Br.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson has a bit of luck approaching H1 via a few wire flicks; has balls in position for a standard TP.

Lawn 9: Wixy misses return roquet on K after 2b to near R and Y which are mid-lawn 8 yards S of 4b. Brown on H4.

Sorry for the pause, I decided to go and catch up with the rest of the commentary team.

I've had feedback from commentary readers that 'Brown takes green to 4b' is very confusing. Maybe I should call him Robin instead

Lawn 9: Kibble is approaching H2 with R. Robin is on the lawn, looks like he is making a contact leave.
Lawn 10: Wilkinson has a hampered shot after 1b, and it looks like he has jawsed penult peel. He strikes the ball cleanly but misses roquet.
Lawn 11: RM Smith did not manage to establish a break and Trimmer is on the lawn. It looks like he is having a leave. Noble and Death have yet to start game 2.

Lawn 9: Avery playing P takes contact from Gr in C2 towards Br in C3. Takes off short and misses Br in C3. White is towards C4. Kibble is approaching H4.
Lawn 10: Grimsley is making a leave with his 4b ball (Y).

Lawn 11: Death v Noble have started Game 2. Death hits H5 and stops in front with Br, Noble shoots W from C1 at Br and misses to E Bdy. Trimmer is making another leave against Smith.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson hits in with K (for rover).

Lawn 11: Noble is first to take croquet in game 2. Trimmer improves his position behind H1 again vs RM Smith in C3.

Lawn 9: Kibble (R) has gone to 1b with a spread. Wixy is shooting at peg ball (U) with K from C1.

Lawn 9: Avery makes a leave vs Robin; Robin is taking a shot with Br at P and W outside C4.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson approaching 4b with K; partner is on rover. Y is in C1 so he'll be looking to finish this turn or it might be hard to make a good leave.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson has rushed peelee in front of rover with just one escape ball.
Lawn 11: Noble has not got going
. Trimmer has his balls near C4; RM Smith in C2.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson takes first game against Grimsley +17.

Lawn 9: Wixy is in a break with his backward ball (K), approaching H2. Avery is in play.

Lawn 11: Trimmer is for H4 now.

Lawn 9: Wixy for H4. Avery is making a spread, and approaching H6 with oppo balls already in position.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson v Grimsley game 2. Grimsley UK, Wilkinson RY. U to E bdy, R duffer, K misses U. Y shooting at duffer now.

Lawn 11: Death is going to 1b with spread. Noble looks like he got to H3 previously with W. Trimmer is doing more wiring around H4; RM Smith in C1.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson hits duffer and has rushed oppo to H1. Makes H1.

Lawn 9: Robin taking long lift with Gr and P and W. Hits W on bdy. Wixy approaching H6.

Lawn 11: Noble hits long lift. Trimmer is finally approaching H4.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson blobs H3 with Y, it looks like he was unlucky with the approach rolling off.

Lawn 11: Noble does a great approach shot to H1 from near H5. Runs it. RM Smith misses at RY after Trimmer sticks in H4 with R, Y just
to the side.

Lawn 9: Wixy is taking backward ball to peg. Brown is on H3.

Lawn 11: Robin is going to attempt a quad, with partner for 3b.
Wixy is on penult.

Lawn 11: Great guffaws... Trimmer approaches H5 off oppo, smacks through the 2 yard hoop way too hard and centre pegs, bouncing into perfect position to rush back to partner near H4. Noble on H6.

Lawn 10: Grimsley is in break with U for H4

Lawn 9: Robin got the first peel through 3b to N of 4b. He is now for H6.

Lawn 11: Trimmer make H6 off partner.

Lawn 9: Wixy looks like he is finishing against Kibble. Wins +19. So he is the first person through his first round KO, winning +20, +19QP. Clearly I missed the entire peeling turn - but none of you wanted the details did you?

Lawn 9: Robin is now for 1b, having only done one peel so far.

Lawn 10: Grimsley is on 2b with U. Oppo is for H1 (R) and H3 (Y).

Lawn 11: Trimmer in play. Death has just taken contact after George went to 4b.

I've been asked to report that Ian has had technical problems with commentary, and is also on his way out of the club as we speak. So there will be no more commentary on lawns 3, 4, 5, 6 at present. Hopgood is finishing his standard TP against Fulford on lawn 6.

Lawn 9: Robin's QP attempt now on straight triple.
Lawn 10: Grimsley went to 4b, Wilkinson (Y) taking contact from partner ball outside C4, going to C3, where he is approaching from the corner.
Lawn 11: Death playing Gr didn't get in front of H1 from roll up, tries to half jump his ball and partner to boundary but ends up with full jump. Noble shoots at Br N of H1 and ends up running the hoop. Trimmer still in play.

Lawn 9: Robin got the 4b peel and currently lining up a bombard. His bombard looked great, except that strikers ball rolled on and hit peelee in the same stroke.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson on H5.
Lawn 11: Death in play. He peels 1b going to reception ball 4 yardsSE of H2. Unfortunately strikers ball ended up hampered by peelee by a few inches. Ref is called, James dribbles and misses. Trimmer is approaching 2b with a 3 ball break.

Lawn 9: Robin has to settle for penult and peg. He's currently making a leave.
Lawn 10: Wilkinson on H6.

Lawn 10: Wilkinson hampered after H6.

Lawn 9: Robin is making a spread. Clips: Br penult, Gr peg, W 1b, P H1.
Lawn 10: Wilkinson makes hampered shot and is making a leave after H6.

Lawn 11: Trimmer now on penult with break. Noble is on break with backward ball, and has a delayed TP to level the match.

On lawn 6, Hopgood has just taken the first game vs Fulford.

Score was +12tp

Lawn 9: Avery missed short lift against Robin, who needs to finish from penult and peg to level the match.

Lawn 11: Noble over approaches H6. Trimmer takes the first game against RM Smith +12TPO.

Lawn 10: Grimsley hit partner without lifting the ball. Making a leave.

Lawn 11: Death hits, and is looking to restart a massive peeling turn (partner on 2b).

Lawn 9: Robin levels the match vs Avery, winning game 2 +20.

I'm heading to lunch, so Joel Taylor will be taking over.

Wilkinson has hit a double target and is looking to get started with his back ball.

Death has jawsed the 2b peel. Wilko has made hoop 1 with all the balls under control.

Death has missed at hoop 5, leaving George with all the balls and a pioneer at hoop 6 (his next hoop).

George made 6 and has just solidly run 1b from an angled position. Wilkinson is trying a tpo, lining up the 4b peel, which he jawses.

Actually he has peeled 4b, just, but is hampered in hitting the escape ball.

George has things nicely under control, going around to peg, one presumes.

Wilkinson is praying to the croquet gods that he has lined this shot up right.

It's called a clean hit, so the tpo will continue.

George is actually going to attempt a straight triple. He's jawsed the peelee and jumped clean over it to the boundary.

The long return roquet is hit, so the break can continue.

He rush peels 4b.

Meanwhile, on lawn 4, Chapman has done a tpo and peeled partner through 1b, 2b and 3b, and has left a two-ball ending with oppo on 2.

George has run rover and will leave a spread with his clips on peg and penult, versus 5 and 3b.

Wilkinson has had to use his peelee as the 2b pioneer, so a bit of work to finish the tpo, but the balls are nicely under control.

James misses the lift against George, leaving both his balls by hoop 5. Should be no problem for George to finish from here.

Wilkinson has spent a good 2 min lining up the penult peel. It bounces off the wire, so he will have to peel it going to 4b.

He has knocked the peelee into decent peeling position but again fails to get the peel.

On lawn 11, George has pegged out for a +14 win, leaving the match tied at 1.

Wilkinson now has a straight double to finish the tpo.

The peelee is practically in the jaws of penult, so he should be able to get a good peel.

He peels it into perfect position in front of rover and smiles confidently to the assembled spectators.

He hasn't managed to rush the peelee into perfect position, and is now facing a short angled rover peel, which he Irishes through comfortably.

Wilkinson completes the tpo, leaving his 1b ball in the middle of the east boundary and his peg ball in corner 2.

Grimsley's remaining ball is for hoop 1 and he's taking contact from the ball in corner 2.

Grimsley rolls red to within 10 m of the yellow and takes position at hoop 1. The players decide to take lunch, while the spectators discuss what Grimsley should have done.

Hi all, right I'm back from lunch. A few results have come through. Mounfield has beaten C Williams +24 +26TP, Bamford beaten Goacher +25TP +26SXP, and Chapman beat Aiton +20 +9TPO, to join Wicks who beat Kibble +20 +19TP earlier

Hopgood is game up against Fulford, Avery and Brown are 1-1 and Death and George Noble are also 1-1. I believe Rothman has beaten Higgins in straight games.

Not many laptops around the club today, so I'm afraid it will be hard to cover all the 7
lawns.
